Walking School Bus
Walking School Bus
Alabama’s first daily walk-to-school program
The smallest Trailblazers are the children at Fairhope West and East Elementary schools who walk to school every day, rain or shine. Under adult supervision, the backpack brigade makes the seven-tenths’ mile trek starting from the designated meeting spot at the Fairhope campus of Coastal Community College.
Students enjoy outdoor recreation and socialization, learn safe walking skills, and arrive at school ready to focus.
After a big 10-year anniversary celebration during the 2023-24 school year, Walking School Bus is now in its 11th year. See photos from our 10-year bash here. WSB is made possible through the commitment of volunteers, parents, teachers and sponsors, as well as support from the City of Fairhope. It is the first daily walk-to-school program in Alabama.
Organized walks to school benefit the entire community by reducing traffic congestion and air pollution associated with long car lines, and by teaching children lifelong healthy habits.
